Monte Cristo June 2014-H

This weekend me and my husband hiked to Monte Cristo off the mountain loop highway. I can't believe we've lived in the area for 3 years and never been here before!!!  Monte Cristo is an old abandon mining town from the late 1800s and some parts of the town still remain.

The hike itself is rather boring, a flat four mile walk each way on an old road no longer accessible to vehicles.  But on a rainy day with a good buddy (and dog!) it's the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Later this summer they are planning on closing the trail to remove hazardous materials and chemicals that remain from the mining days, but for now it remains open.

If you go, park at the Barlow pass trailhead and walk down the highway to the gated road. This road is also the gateway to Glacier Basin (an area that would make for some great backpacking trips!). Follow the road until it turns into a trail and when you see a wooden sign pointing to the right that says "Weden Creek" DONT follow it, walk behind the sign and follow the trail to the rivers edge. There is a nice log crossing here, which is the easiest way to cross when the waters high. It might be hard to cross here with bikes, but our dog had no problems!

This hike was also Dahlia's first trip with her new backpack! She LOVED it! The folks at Paddywack in Milk Creek helped us find the perfect fit and we are so excited to have her carry her own essentials! One important thing i learned is to be sure to pack everything in plastic bags-especially if your dog likes to lay in creeks like Dahlia!!
